Curated by Johan & Levi in collaboration with Fondazione Luigi Rovati
In the context of MuseoCity 2025, Fondazione Luigi Rovati is hosting a conversation between Giovanni Carrada, James M. Bradburne and Daniela Bruno, on the occasion of the publication of the book Why Don't You Talk? How to narrate cultural heritage by Giovanni Carrada, published by Johan & Levi.
The meeting is part of the series Art Conversations, curated by Johan & Levi in collaboration with Fondazione Luigi Rovati.
Italy's historical and artistic heritage has such a cumbersome and obvious problem that we end up not even noticing it: it does not speak to those who visit it. With lucky exceptions, our museums do not help people understand and enjoy their collections, archaeological parks their ruins, monuments our past. For the seven out of ten Italians who never set foot there, art and the past are just boredom. While the others, who mostly flock to the most famous places, often return home with a generic and ephemeral wonder, with nothing new born within them.
The reason why our cultural heritage does not speak to us, like Michelangelo's Moses in legend, is simple: it almost never can do so on its own. And until yesterday we did not bother to give it a voice. So today we are among the best at studying, protecting and restoring, but we have not yet learned to “interpret,” and thus to give the public new knowledge, curiosities, emotions. To ignite his imagination. To make people want to see and know more.
Giovanni Carrada (1963) is a curator of science popularization projects and author of television programs, such as those of Piero and Alberto Angela. For years he has also been planning and creating exhibitions, museum displays and interventions to enhance Italy's historical, artistic, archaeological and industrial heritage.
